To reduce your calling credit or monthly bills, there are few things you’ll have to do before, during and after calls.

If you’re like me and you have the intention of conserving or have concern with the amount of money you hand off to greedy mobile operators this entry may be for you.

Firstly, you must admit that every second counts. Unless you’ve sold your liberty and negotiated to have a different calling plan, the amount of money you spend on calling directly depends on the extent of time between the second your party accepts the call to when that call ends. Your aim is to reduce that time.

	Before a call:

Determine what network your recipient uses – networks usually charge more for calls to external networks. You can always find out the moment you’re getting the number, but if you’re past that stage there are many tools you can use to find out: The directory, TechJamaica.com and smsfree.

● Know exactly who you wish to speak to. If it includes more than one person, make sure you dial the most suitable number.

● Have everything you wish to say clearly defined in your mind or jotted down; State your questions in the most suitableway for that particular person to get the quickest response. Be ready to spill it out the moment the phone is answered without going too fast of-course.

● Ask yourself if what you want to discuss is worth the call.

	During the call:

● Relax. When you relax, the conversation will go easier and much smoother.

● State who you are if you have reason to believe your recipient may not know.

● Nudge the conversation to flow, avoid silent periods.

● Avoid being put on hold at all costs; Offer to call back.

● Be ready to end the call the instant the conversation end (I usually keep a thumb on the reject button ready to go!)

	After your call:

● Check the duration of the ended call. You will always want to improve and ensure you did the best at the previous tips.

● Lock the keypad/screen. Phones tend to find themselves dialing away sometimes.

Making short calls is a skill and takes practice.

This Jamaica Gleaner article goes on to add that, “While the issue is now being championed by Cable and Wireless Jamaica/LIME, which holds second place to market leader Digicel in terms of mobile customer base, Digicel remains mum on the idea, and the utilities regulator [Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR)] says the matter is nowhere on its radar for early policy consideration.”

So given that mobile customers have waited almost 3 years since, what is the OUR’s and mobile service providers position on this matter at this time?

As now reported in the article “Paulwell brokers Lime/Digicel agreement”, published Tuesday, February 14, 2012, in The Jamaica Observer, the introduction of local number portability for both fixed and mobile networks; will be addressed with expedition for the betterment of the industry and the nation as a whole.

It’s also reported that the three (3) remaining Telecoms service providers Digicel, LIME and Triple-service provider Flow Jamaica are in agreement and support of local number portability. As reported in the article “Flow, Digicel back number portability” published in the Jamaica-Gleaner on February 19, 2012, “Flow Jamaica, said its network infrastructure was already capable of supporting local number portability (LNP) and it was committed to working with stakeholders to ensure its implementation as quickly as possible”. Also “Digicel Jamaica has now openly declared its support for local number portability”.

The agreement and support for number portability by Telecoms providers is a milestone customers have been salivating for, but how long before our local Telecoms providers, actually align MNP with their service offerings?

While customers look forward to number portability offerings, it’s important that customers brace themselves for a “marketing frenzy [to] take place as the Jamaican operators seek to out manoeuvre each other with cheaper and more innovative price packages, forcing prices down, consumers will have a field day.” Brand Strategist Aldo commented in the article “Mobile Number Portability (MNP)” published by Business Suite Magazine.

Women have become a force to be reckoned with and have become a power house in almost every male dominated sector of society. This gender has always been seen as the weaker sex and incapable of caring out specific jobs. Women in the early twentieth century were not as fortunate as those in this era.

Married women at the start of the early twentieth century had a specific role in British society which was to be housewives. This meant they had to undergo the normal day to day hassle of looking after the children, cooking, cleaning and providing the usual ‘pleasures’ for their spouses whilst the men toiled in the fields and did whatever they had to,to bring in the dough.

Women that were from poor families or who were single were volunarable to verbal abuse as the fact that they were not married would be a constant taunt. This class of society were only allowed to part-take only in service jobs such as being a waitress or a cook.

Many wives in this time were unhappy as they weren’t happy with their marriages and the fact that they were not able to go out and work like the males did. Queen Victoria’s statement, “Let women be what God intended, a helpmate for man, but with totally different duties and vocations” was enlightening to women but upon hearing these words, men in powerful positions used those words to further taunt and prevent the progress of women. Then finally in the 1891, women found out by the court of law that they could not be forced to lived with a man against their will. This was wonderful news but it also brought sorrow as they were heavily dependent on their male counterparts for income as they themselves were not independent. The thought of leaving was further pushed out by the fact that if they did they would be shunned and become outcast to society. As a result many wives stayed in their marriages not because of their undying devotion to their spouse but because they could do no better.

In 1865, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson became the first female to qualify to become a licensed doctor (GP). She then faced many obstacles trying to make progress in her professional career as men refused to go to her because she was a female. It took years for her to successfully be seen as the professional she truly was. In this Elizabeth G Anderson made a difference, as she had shown women that there was nothing they couldn’t accomplish through hard work and dedication.

Today women are able to work, go to school and take care of their families some of whom do them all! They have fought the good fight through the dark roads, the torments, the struggles and are now strong, independent and successful. Every day a women climbs over the barrier of gender discrimination and succeeds. Turns out we are pretty strong after all! So hats off to all women around the world! You v’e done well!

 })();

Ever since its introduction to the world in 2003, the Blackberry Smart Phone has become a household name and a “must have” in the mobile arena. Research In Motion (RIM), the company responsible for the innovative and award-winning BlackBerry product line has showed their intent to stick around for the long haul. In a time when mobile communication was evolving and the demand for more capable phones was on the rise, there came RIM with the Blackberry series. Features associated with Blackberry Smartphones like sms, messenger, social apps, Internet, WiFi; just to name a few, were of interest to many groups and countries worldwide. The demand for this technology was so welcomed that RIM had to ramp up production and produce new and improved handsets which to date have sold a total of 20million Blackberries worldwide with a BB service subscriber base of 11 million.

In Jamaica, the “BB” as it’s more commonly known, has become essential for businesses as well as for the social sphere. Jamaicans have given life to these devices and have created an infectious craze which seems incurable. The superiority of RIM’s Blackberry Smartphones is quite evident in the island, as they have completely massacred their competition which is partly attributed to the loyal BB fan base they enjoy in the country. Many such users have refused to switch or purchase any other devices not bearing the trusted logo. And who can blame them, the plethora of individuals already owning and utilizing the BB service is astounding! Businesses are latching on to this technology and in some cases are even purchasing BB Smartphones for their employees in order have that ease of constant- yet instant access. This device has modernized our view of cellular phone technology but has also placed us in the fore front where high radiation levels are concerned.

The Blackberry 8330 has been found to emit the highest level of radiation throughout the entire product line and is the sixth highest emitter on a global basis! Being in possession of this device will also give way to opportunist who target carriers of such devices. These criminal elements have enjoyed the lucrative income earned from stealing these phones. Unfortunately, Blackberry phones aren’t the only things stolen form the user. In some cases, lives have been lost due to this device. One such case is like that of ‘Copper Cat‘ who was gunned down and killed allegedly for his blackberry phone at his gate. The mobile companies have also been finding the ‘BB factor’ in Jamaica difficult to by-pass. Companies like Apple, makers of the amazing IPhone 4S, have failed to make their mark in the country despite having more advanced features accompanied with BB messenger! Is it a case of first come first serve? Or does it just boil down to what Jamaicans consider as ’style’ ;whatever is in they’ll do it?

Whatever the case, these smartphones are mesmerizing the Jamaican public, the question however, is whether we r’e willing to become just another statistic in a world where criminals stop at nothing to attain valuable possesions. But that’s my opinion, what do you think?

Android users, the time has almost come. Instagram, the popular photo-filtering and sharing app, is on its way to Google’s mobile operating system.

Co-founder Kevin Systrom announced at SXSW Sunday that the long-awaited Android version of Instagram is nearly here. He teased the version on stage, but didn’t provide a demo. The Android version is currently being tested in private beta and will be released “very soon.”

“In some ways, it’s better than our iOS app. It’s crazy,” Systrom said. In a Q&A following his presentation, Systrom said the app is fast, works great on large screens and can share photos to Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and other networks.

What took the startup so long to bring what’s clearly an extremely popular app to Android? “I don’t think it took us so long. We just had priorities. Had we tried to be both on Android and iPhone at the same time, it would’ve been tough to innovate in the way that we have,” he said.

David Clarke is CEO and Co-Founder of BGT Partners, a 2011 and 2010 Ad Age Best Place to Work in the U.S. BGT creates interactive marketing and technology solutions for global corporations that strengthen brands, develop more engaging relationships and transform businesses.

It’s time to take tablet design seriously and evaluate how your brand’s web presence caters to tablet consumers. As usual, Apple is the primary driver behind tablet growth, and the new IPad is yet again redefining the tablet experience and pushing the boundaries of how we use the web.

But what does it mean for your web presence? Below are three ways for your brand to excel in the tablet revolution so you don’t get left behind.

1. Prepare Your Site to Go “Beyond HD”

Just as the demand for high-definition technology forced broadcasters to convert their shows, the new iPad may force brands to make their websites retina display-friendly. With the new iPad, your site is not going to look the same as it did before. The original and second-generation iPads both have a screen resolution of 1024 x 768, but the new iPad’s resolution of 2048 x 1536 is double that in both directions.

In 2012, that same shift is taking place when it comes to supporting multiple mobile platforms. Sure, some companies can focus on just one operating system and exclude all others, but most businesses and brands need to target myriad device types. It’s no longer enough to just have an iPhone app — even small and medium sized businesses need to have a plan to support iPad, Android phones, the Amazon Kindle, larger Android tablets, Windows Phone and BlackBerry.

Fortunately, an entire sub-industry of development tools and languages exist to help solve this problem. Enter the cross-platform mobile framework.
