Caution CreativityCLIENT PROCESS

The process of defining the clients solution after we have discovered their needs, requires our project team to be appointed appropriately. The team is generally comprised of three or more members including a project leader, content manager, technical lead, design manager and a strategy consultant.

At ZipTechnologies site definition always includes a URL where we post at least weekly builds of our client's sites, also a QA (Quality Assurance) forum for questions and answers.

The site definition process is the most important step in creating the website for our clients. It sets the width the breadth and the height of the final product.

"To define a thing is to substitute the definition for the thing itself."

A good website is one that has been well thought out from the start. We will suggest some of the points we might consider and show you how we write a set of professionsl website specifications. Please note that website definitions vary greatly depending on a number of factors some of which are the type of site, the scope of the site and most importantly the budget of the site.

Website Definition

  • What type of writing style will be used? - The specification should be written in clear and concise terms. It should state very clearly what is going to be done, not what might or should be done.
  • Define the primary content types & segments for your website? - e.g. the home page, product and service pages and contact information. These pages should be clearly defined, which pages exactly and how many.
  • List the technical aspects of the site? - This should indicate the technology that will be used to build the site. Most sites now use 'Open Source' software for many reasons. It is more robust, less expensive, more pervasive and much more.
  • Establish universal standards to be met, e.g. XHTML strict, CSS 2.0, etc.? - Many mature standards now exist that define clear guidelines to ensure that both browsers and people who might be impaired can access most if not all pages of a website.
  • Define the secondary content of your site? - Secondary information might be mission statements, case studies, contact information and more. These should be as clearly defined as the primary content on the website.
  • Define the functionality and usability? - Client information regarding target audience, purpose of the website and media to be used on the website will define the functionality of the site.
  • Define the style and layout of the website?
    - CSS standards are a guide to controllable style and creative layout for any professional site.
  • Define any additional requirements that are needed - Many additional items are to be considered when creating a website. e.b. accessibility, code validation, Maintenance, hosting, support and more.

"There is an evil tendency underlying all our technology - the tendency to do what is reasonable even when it isn't any good." - Robert Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
